Chennai Bus Hire Rate Card 2026
Eight vehicle classes, priced separately, with the inclusion basis stated above every table. Local 10 hr / 100 km packages, outstation per-kilometre rates, daily kilometre minimums and driver bata, for 17 to 55 seats.
In short
In Chennai a local bus hire runs on a 10 hr / 100 km package: ₹6,500 – ₹8,500 for a 17/20-seat tempo traveller, ₹9,000 – ₹12,000 for an AC minibus and ₹12,500 – ₹18,000 for a 45-seat AC coach. Outstation is per kilometre — ₹24 to ₹110 — against a 200 to 300 km daily minimum, with bata of ₹500 – ₹1,250 per calendar day and GST at 5% extra.

Read the basis before you read the numbers
Inside every rate below
- The vehicle in the class you booked — not "a similar bus" — with its registration number sent to you the evening before
- Fuel for the contracted distance: the 100 km inside a local package, or the daily kilometre minimum on an outstation run
- A badged driver, and a second driver on any run planned beyond 12 hours of wheel time
- Vehicle insurance, fitness certificate, Tamil Nadu contract-carriage permit, routine maintenance and a cleaned bus at the gate
Outside it, billed at actuals
- Tolls and parking, with the receipts attached to the final invoice
- Inter-state permit or entry tax where the route crosses into Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh or Telangana
- Kilometres and hours beyond the package, at the extra-km and extra-hour rate printed in your class table
- Driver bata per calendar day, night halt where the bus sleeps away from the yard, and the ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 hill surcharge for Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud and Yelagiri
- GST at 5% on the transport service
How the clock and the meter run
- Garage-to-garage: billing starts when the bus leaves our Chennai yard and stops when it returns to it
- Bata is counted by calendar day, not in 24-hour blocks
- 25% advance confirms the bus and the date; the balance falls due when the trip finishes
- Rates are for the whole vehicle. Divide by your headcount yourself — we do not sell seats
Chennai bus hire rates at a glance
Every row below is priced on the basis set out above: vehicle, fuel, driver and insurance inside the rate; tolls, permits, bata and GST outside it. Find your class, not your seat count — a 45-seater appears three times in this table at three different prices because a 45-seat school bus and a 45-seat Volvo are not the same product.

Why this card is built on class, not seat count
Ask five Chennai operators what a 45-seater costs per kilometre and you will get answers between ₹45 and ₹90. Neither number is dishonest. One of them is quoting a 3+2 bench-seat bus built for school runs and factory shifts; the other is quoting a multi-axle Volvo with air suspension and reclining 2+2 seats. Seat count tells you how many people fit. It tells you nothing about what the vehicle costs to run, and the per-kilometre rate follows the running cost.
So this card separates the two. Every class below has its own table with its own extra-kilometre and extra-hour rate, because those are the lines that decide your final bill far more often than the headline day rate does. A group that books a ₹9,500 non-AC coach and then runs 240 km on a 100 km package pays more in extra kilometres than the package itself cost.
One more distinction that this market blurs: seats per row. Non-AC buses in Tamil Nadu are almost universally 3+2 — five seats across a body that an AC coach fills with four. That is why a 3+2 body seats 55 where the identical 2+2 body seats 45, and it is why the cheapest per-head rate in the fleet always comes from a non-AC coach.
Tempo Traveller, 17 and 20 seater
Our floor. AC, 2+1 pushback, roof carrier for luggage. Priced on the same basis as every table on this page — fuel and driver in, tolls, bata, permits and 5% GST out. Below 17 seats is not our business: 12 and 14-seat travellers, Innovas and cars are run by our sister brand chennaicarrentalss.com.

Minibus, 21 to 27 seater
The workhorse of Chennai group travel, and the only class where the AC decision genuinely changes the vehicle rather than just the comfort. Non-AC minibuses are 3+2 bench; AC minibuses are 2+2. Same inclusion basis: vehicle, fuel and driver inside the rate, everything else named and billed at actuals.

Midi coach, 30 and 32 seater
A full coach body shortened enough to turn into a temple street or an Ambattur industrial lane. AC, 2+2 pushback, underbody boot. Rates below sit on the standard basis — fuel and driver in; tolls, parking, permits, bata, hill surcharge and GST at 5% out.

Coach, 35 to 55 seater
Where most of our kilometres are run. Two products share these seat counts: a 3+2 non-AC bench coach and a 2+2 AC pushback coach. They are separated below, because quoting them together is exactly how this market confuses people. Basis unchanged — vehicle, fuel, driver and insurance included; extras named.
| Vehicle | Local 10 hr / 100 km | Extra km | Extra hour | Outstation ₹ / km | Min km / day | Bata / day |

Luxury coach — Volvo, BharatBenz, Benz
Multi-axle, air suspension, wide 2+2 pushback, charging points. Booked for out-of-town wedding parties, board and client movements, and the Bangalore and Kerala runs where four hours of ghat road decide whether the group arrives usable. Same basis; the surcharge lines are the same lines, on a bigger number.
| Package | 41 / 45 / 49 seater Volvo or BharatBenz | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4 hr / 40 km — city half day | ₹14,000 | Airport or station pickup and a single venue |
| 8 hr / 80 km | ₹18,000 | Observed Chennai slab rate for a 45-seat AC Volvo |
| 10 hr / 100 km — our standard local package | ₹18,000 – ₹27,000 | The Chennai market standard package length |
| 12 hr / 100 km | ₹27,000 | Long wedding day, multiple venues |
| Outstation per km | ₹70 – ₹95 | 200 km daily minimum, garage-to-garage |
| Extra km / extra hour | ₹75 – ₹85 · ₹1,400 | Beyond the package |
| Driver bata | ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 per calendar day | Plus ₹1,000 night allowance where the bus sleeps out |
AC sleeper coach, 30 to 40 berth
Berths, not seats, and therefore priced per day rather than on a local package — a sleeper that stays inside Chennai for ten hours is a waste of the product. This class exists for the overnight pilgrimage run: leave Chennai after dinner, wake at Rameswaram, Velankanni or the Sabarimala base.
| Vehicle | Per day | Outstation ₹ / km | Min km / day | Bata / day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 berth AC sleeper | ₹22,000 – ₹26,000 | ₹85 – ₹95 | 250 | ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 |
| 36 – 40 berth AC sleeper | ₹26,000 – ₹32,000 | ₹95 – ₹110 | 250 | ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 |
Local package or outstation per km — which one you are buying
Chennai runs two pricing constructs, and half the confusion in this market comes from people comparing a quote built on one against a quote built on the other.
The local package is 10 hours and 100 kilometres. That is the Chennai standard, and it is worth knowing that it is not the national one — Bengaluru's market runs on 8 hours and 80 kilometres, so a Bangalore quote you are holding up for comparison is buying you two hours and twenty kilometres less. Local packages suit anything that starts and ends in the city on the same day: a wedding shuttle between a T Nagar hotel and a mandapam, a conference run from the airport to a Guindy venue, a factory shift cycle, a day of city sightseeing. Go past the package and you pay the extra-kilometre and extra-hour rates in your class table — both of them, if you overrun both.
Outstation is per kilometre against a daily minimum, garage-to-garage. The clock and the odometer both start at our Chennai yard. A Pondicherry day trip that you experience as 340 km is billed as 340 km, because it beats the minimum. A Tirupati day trip you experience as 280 km is billed at the minimum for the class, which for an AC coach is 200 – 250 km and for a non-AC coach is 300 km. That is not a penalty; it is the reason a bus can be sent 140 km for you at all.
The rule of thumb we use when quoting: if the whole job fits inside ten hours and a hundred kilometres, take the package. If it does not, ask for both numbers and take the lower. We will run that comparison for you before you pay anything.
The minimum kilometres a day, and why AC coaches have a lower one
Daily minimums in Chennai sit between 200 and 300 km depending on class. Non-AC minibuses and coaches carry 300 km. Tempo travellers, AC minibuses, midi coaches and sleepers carry 250 km. AC and luxury coaches carry 200 – 250 km.
That looks backwards until you see the whole quote. An AC coach earns a higher per-kilometre rate, so it does not need as many kilometres in the day to cover the cost of having that bus away from the yard. One Chennai operator's published tariff makes the trade visible: the same 35-seater is ₹13,500 non-AC for 300 km, or ₹14,500 AC for only 200 km. On a short trip — Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram, Tirupati and back — the AC bus can genuinely be the cheaper booking, because you are buying 200 billable kilometres instead of 300.
Ask for your quote to state the minimum. If it does not, you have not been given a price; you have been given the start of one.
Driver bata is counted per calendar day, not per 24 hours
This is the single most common billing argument in Chennai bus hire, and it is entirely avoidable. Bata is the driver's allowance for food and a bed while the bus is away. It runs ₹500 – ₹1,250 a day depending on class. The dispute is never about the rate. It is about the count.
Bata is charged by the calendar day the bus is out, not by 24-hour blocks from departure. A trip that leaves at 11 pm on Friday and gets back at 2 am on Sunday is 27 hours on the road — and three bata days, because it touched Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Every operator in this market bills it that way. Almost none of them say so before the trip, which is why the conversation happens at the end instead of the beginning.
We put the bata-day count as a numbered line on the quote: 3 calendar days × ₹900 = ₹2,700. If you want to cut it, the lever is the departure time, not the negotiation. Leaving at 5 am on Saturday instead of 11 pm on Friday removes an entire bata day from the same itinerary.
Tolls, parking, permits and GST
Tolls and parking are billed at actuals with receipts. On a Chennai run that usually means the ECR plazas towards Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, NH716 towards Tiruttani and Tirupati, NH32 towards Nagapattinam and Velankanni, and NH48 towards Vellore and Bengaluru. Temple and hill-station car parks are collected in cash and passed through unmarked.
Permits are where a quote can move by five figures. Inside Tamil Nadu, the contract-carriage permit our buses already hold covers you and there is nothing to add. Cross a state line and the permit class decides the bill: a bus on a state permit pays an entry tax at the Karnataka, Kerala or Andhra border, while a bus on an All India Tourist Permit pays none of it under the 2023 AITP rules. For a 35 – 49 seater entering Karnataka that difference is typically ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 per entry. We put AITP vehicles on every Bengaluru, Tirupati and Kerala run. The full tables are on the inclusions and permits page.
Hill stations carry a ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 surcharge for Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud and Yelagiri. It pays for the clutch, brake and tyre wear of a ghat climb in a loaded coach, and it is a separate line rather than a hidden uplift on the per-km rate.
GST is 5% on the transport service, shown as its own line. Businesses booking staff transport or industrial visits get a proper GST invoice against a PO; we do not run cash bookings for corporate accounts.
Worked example: 45-seat AC coach, Chennai to Tirupati, 2 days
Here is the arithmetic we would send you, line by line, for the most-booked outstation trip on this site. Distance is 140 km each way on NH716 via Tiruttani, so the actual running is about 280 km — but the billing runs on the daily minimum, and this is exactly the point where quotes stop matching each other.
| Line | Basis | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Coach hire | 2 days × 200 – 250 km minimum × ₹55 – ₹70 per km | ₹22,000 – ₹35,000 |
| Driver bata | 2 calendar days × ₹800 – ₹1,000 | ₹1,600 – ₹2,000 |
| Andhra Pradesh entry tax | AITP vehicle, 2023 rules | nil |
| Tolls and parking | NH716 plazas, Alipiri and Tirumala car parks | at actuals, receipts attached |
| Subtotal before GST | ₹23,600 – ₹37,000 | |
| GST | 5% on the transport service | ₹1,180 – ₹1,850 |
| Total, excluding tolls and parking | ₹24,800 – ₹38,900 | |
| Same trip as a one-day darshan run | 1 bata day, one minimum instead of two | ₹26,000 – ₹36,000 all-in |
Why two quotes for "the same bus" can differ by 40%
When a client sends us a rival quote to match, the gap almost always comes from one of six places, and only one of them is margin.
- Different class, same seat count. A 45-seat 3+2 non-AC bus against a 45-seat 2+2 AC coach is a ₹15 – ₹25 per kilometre difference before anyone has negotiated.
- Different daily minimum. 200 km versus 300 km on a three-day trip is 300 billable kilometres of difference.
- Bata counted differently. Two days by the 24-hour clock, three by the calendar. Same trip, one extra day's allowance.
- Permit class. An AITP coach and a state-permit coach quote the same until the Karnataka border, where one of them pays ₹15,000 – ₹35,000.
- GST shown or not shown. 5% of a ₹90,000 trip is ₹4,500, and a quote that omits it is not cheaper, only later.
- Tolls in or out. Both practices exist in this market. Neither is wrong; comparing one against the other is.
Send us the competing quote. We will tell you which of those six it is, even on the occasions when the honest answer is that their number is genuinely better than ours for your trip.
Questions we answer daily
How much does a 45 seater bus cost per km in Chennai?
It depends on the class behind the seat count. A 45-seat non-AC 3+2 coach runs ₹45 – ₹52 per km, an AC 2+2 pushback coach ₹62 – ₹70, and a Volvo or BharatBenz multi-axle ₹70 – ₹95. All three bill against a daily minimum of 200 – 300 km, with bata of ₹500 – ₹1,250 per calendar day and 5% GST on top.
What is the local package for a bus in Chennai?
Chennai's market standard is 10 hours and 100 kilometres — not the 8 hours and 80 kilometres used in Bengaluru. A 20-seat tempo traveller on that package is ₹7,500 – ₹8,500, a 25-seat AC minibus ₹10,000 – ₹11,000 and a 45-seat AC coach ₹16,000 – ₹18,000, before tolls, parking, bata and GST.
Why is there a minimum kilometre per day on outstation hire?
Because the bus leaves our yard whether you drive 90 km or 290 km that day. Chennai minimums are 300 km for non-AC minibuses and coaches, 250 km for tempo travellers, AC minibuses, midi coaches and sleepers, and 200 – 250 km for AC and luxury coaches. Drive under it and you are billed the minimum.
Is driver bata included in the rate?
No. Bata is ₹500 – ₹1,250 per calendar day depending on class, quoted as its own line. It is counted by calendar day rather than in 24-hour blocks, so a trip from 11 pm Friday to 2 am Sunday is three bata days even though the bus is out for only 27 hours.
Do you charge GST on bus rental?
Yes, 5% on the transport service, shown separately on the invoice rather than buried in the rate. Companies, schools and colleges get a GST invoice against a purchase order, which matters if you intend to claim the expense or route it through a vendor account.
How much advance do you take to confirm a bus?
25% of the quoted value, by UPI or bank transfer against an invoice. The balance is due when the trip completes, after the odometer reading at the yard and with toll and parking receipts attached. Cancellation terms are printed on the quote, so you know the position before a rupee moves.
Is an AC bus always more expensive than non-AC?
Per kilometre yes — roughly ₹6 – ₹15 more. Per trip, not always. AC coaches carry a 200 – 250 km daily minimum against 300 km for non-AC, so on a short two-day run the AC coach can bill 100 fewer kilometres a day and come out level or cheaper. Ask for both.
Are these rates per seat or for the whole bus?
For the whole bus. We hire out vehicles, not seats — a 45-seat coach at ₹16,000 on a local package costs ₹16,000 whether 30 people board it or 45 do. If you want a per-head figure, divide by your confirmed headcount, and read the seat-count guide before you decide how many seats to book.
When were these rates last checked?
September 2026. We re-verify the card every quarter against our own tariff and eight published Chennai operator tariffs, and we date-stamp it rather than leaving a 2019 page online. Fuel movements and the February permit cycle are the two things that usually move a band.
