AC sleeper coach hire in Chennai
Berths instead of seats, for the trips where the journey is the night: Rameswaram, Velankanni, Sabarimala and the long delta-district runs where a group should arrive rested rather than wrecked.
In short
An AC sleeper coach in Chennai is ₹22,000 – ₹32,000 per day depending on whether it carries 30 or 36 – 40 berths, or ₹85 – ₹110 per kilometre outstation against a 250 km daily minimum. Driver bata is ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 per calendar day, and tolls, parking, permits and 5% GST are extra. There is no local package in this class.

Sleeper coach rates
Priced per day rather than on a 10 hr / 100 km package, because a sleeper standing still in Chennai for ten hours is the wrong product. Standard basis applies: vehicle, fuel, driver and insurance included; tolls, parking, bata, permits and 5% GST named separately.
| Vehicle | Per day | Outstation ₹ / km | Min km / day | Bata / day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 berth AC sleeper | ₹22,000 – ₹26,000 | ₹85 – ₹95 | 250 | ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 |
| 36 – 40 berth AC sleeper | ₹26,000 – ₹32,000 | ₹95 – ₹110 | 250 | ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 |

What a sleeper coach is actually for
A sleeper buys you a night. That is the whole proposition, and it is worth a great deal on exactly four kinds of Chennai trip.
Long-distance pilgrimage. Rameswaram, Velankanni, Madurai and the Sabarimala base are all far enough from Chennai that a seated overnight run leaves a group unable to do much on arrival. Leave after dinner, sleep through NH32 or NH44, arrive for the morning.
Trips where a hotel night can be skipped. For a group of thirty, one night of hotel rooms is frequently more than the difference between a seated coach and a sleeper. Run the comparison before dismissing the class on the day rate.
Circuits with an early first stop. The Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam and the Arupadai Veedu circuit both work far better if the group is standing at the first temple at dawn rather than starting the drive then.
Anything where the return is the problem. A group that has walked all day does not want six hours upright afterwards. Sleepers are often booked one-way in a two-vehicle plan — seated coach out, sleeper back.
The honest drawbacks
We would rather talk people out of this class than deliver a disappointing trip in it.
Luggage. A sleeper carries the least usable luggage per passenger of anything we run, because berths occupy the space that would otherwise be a boot and an aisle. Thirty people with thirty suitcases do not fit. Tell the whole group in writing, before the trip, that it is one small bag each — the message never reaches everyone otherwise.
One adult per berth. Families planning to put two children in a berth must say so at quote stage. It is a safety and comfort question, not a billing one, and it changes which coach we send.
Road quality decides the night. NH44 and NH32 are fine. The last twenty kilometres into many temple towns are not, and no suspension makes a berth comfortable on a broken surface. We plan the itinerary so the rough sections happen while people are awake.
It is not cheap per head. At ₹85 – ₹110 per kilometre, a 30-berth sleeper costs more per person than a 45-seat AC coach. It is bought for the night it saves, not the fare.
Sleeper or seated coach: a comparison worth running
Take a group of thirty-two to Velankanni, two days and one night, 300 km each way.
Seated 45-seat AC coach: ₹48,000 – ₹68,000 all-in for the trip, plus a night's accommodation for thirty-two people at the destination.
30-berth sleeper: two days at ₹22,000 – ₹26,000, or ₹85 – ₹95 per kilometre against a 250 km daily minimum, plus two bata days at ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 and 5% GST — with the overnight spent travelling rather than in rooms.
The sleeper is the dearer vehicle and frequently the cheaper trip. Which way it lands depends entirely on the cost of the rooms you are not booking, so bring us the hotel quote and we will do the sum with you rather than around you.
Questions we answer daily
How much does a sleeper bus cost to rent in Chennai?
₹22,000 – ₹26,000 a day for a 30-berth AC sleeper and ₹26,000 – ₹32,000 for a 36 to 40-berth, or ₹85 – ₹110 per kilometre outstation against a 250 km daily minimum. Driver bata is ₹1,000 – ₹1,250 per calendar day, with tolls, parking, permits and 5% GST extra.
How many berths are in a sleeper coach?
Between 30 and 40, in two tiers down both sides of the aisle. One adult per berth — we do not sell a berth as a double. Families intending to put two children in one berth should say so at quote stage, because it changes which coach we send.
Can I hire a sleeper bus for local use in Chennai?
You can, but you should not. Sleepers are priced per day, not on the 10 hr / 100 km local package, because the product is a night of travel. For city work a 45-seat AC coach at ₹16,000 – ₹18,000 for ten hours does the job for far less.
Is a sleeper bus good for Sabarimala?
For the long run down it is excellent; for the final approach it is not, because large bodies face restrictions near Pamba. Most Chennai Sabarimala groups travel in 21+1 minibuses — an observed 3-day package is ₹37,500 non-AC or ₹46,000 AC, including the Kerala permit and parking.
How much luggage can we carry in a sleeper?
One small bag per person, realistically. Berths take the space a seated coach uses for an underbody boot and a wide aisle. Groups that need real luggage should travel in a 2+2 AC coach and book a hotel night instead — we will say so before you book, not after.
Is a sleeper cheaper than a coach plus hotel rooms?
Often, for groups over about twenty-five. A 30-berth sleeper on a two-day Velankanni trip is ₹22,000 – ₹26,000 a day against ₹48,000 – ₹68,000 all-in for a 45-seat AC coach plus a night's rooms for the group. Bring us the hotel quote and we will run the comparison.
Do sleeper coaches have a toilet?
Most of the Chennai sleeper fleet does not. We plan comfort stops into the itinerary at points that are open at 2 am, which on NH32 and NH44 is a short list and worth agreeing in advance rather than improvising at the roadside.
How far in advance should I book a sleeper coach?
Three to four weeks in ordinary months, and six weeks or more for the November to January Sabarimala and Velankanni feast season — the Chennai sleeper fleet is small, and in December it is booked out well before the seated coaches are.
