Chennai to Bangalore bus hire
The route where a document costs more than the diesel. Written from the Tamil Nadu end: what leaves Chennai, what the Hosur checkpost does about it, and how to make that line read nil.
In short
A Chennai to Bangalore coach charter is ₹58,000 – ₹88,000 all-in for a 45-seat AC coach over two days and one night on an All India Tourist Permit vehicle. On a Tamil Nadu state permit, Karnataka charges ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 entry tax per entry for a 35 to 49 seater — and a round trip crosses the border twice. The route is NH48 via Vellore and Krishnagiri, roughly 350 km.

The same trip, two permit classes
This is the only route on the site where we lead with the permit rather than the rate, because the permit is the larger number. Bands cover the bus, fuel, driver, insurance, two calendar days of bata and 5% GST; tolls, parking and night halt are separate.

Why this page is written from the Chennai end
Chennai to Bengaluru and Bengaluru to Chennai are the same road and two different commercial problems, so we write only one of them here.
Leaving Chennai, your exposure is the Karnataka border: what Karnataka charges a Tamil Nadu vehicle to come in. Leaving Bengaluru, the exposure is the reverse — Tamil Nadu's entry tax, which runs ₹25,000 for a 35-seater, ₹30,500 for a 45-seater and ₹33,000 for a 49-seater, collected at the Hosur side going the other way. That is a real cost and a real page, and it belongs to our Bengaluru operation rather than here. If your trip starts in Bengaluru, read their permits and inter-state tax guide instead, which is the network's canonical treatment of the All India Tourist Permit.
For a Chennai departure, the whole decision is one question asked before you book: is the bus on an AITP or a state permit. Ours are AITP on this route as standard.
The road, the timings and the Hosur checkpost
NH48 west out of Chennai through Sriperumbudur, past Vellore and Ambur, over the Krishnagiri stretch and into Karnataka at Hosur — roughly 350 kilometres, six to seven hours for a coach with one stop, and more if you meet the Electronic City approach at the wrong hour.
The Hosur checkpost is where permit class becomes visible. An AITP vehicle presents its papers and continues. A state-permit vehicle stops, pays, and the group waits. On a wedding or corporate movement with a fixed arrival time, that wait is a second cost on top of the first.
Bengaluru drop points matter more than people expect. A coach entering the city is subject to its own restrictions and traffic, and arriving into Whitefield, Electronic City or the northern side each mean a different last hour. Tell us the actual destination rather than "Bangalore" and the departure time gets planned around it.
Who charters this route from Chennai
Wedding parties. Bringing family from Bengaluru to a Chennai muhurtham, or taking a Chennai group to a Bengaluru wedding. Usually a 45 or 49-seat AC coach, usually across three calendar days, and the group is always surprised by the permit line until we explain it.
Corporate movements. Teams moving between offices for an offsite or a town hall, quoted on the two-day shape with a night halt. The vehicle class tends to move up here — Volvo or BharatBenz at ₹70 – ₹95 per kilometre — because six hours of NH48 is exactly the journey air suspension is for.
College and industrial visits. Batches visiting Bengaluru plants or campuses. The permit question matters most here, because a ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 surprise on a college budget is not absorbable.
Family and community groups. Often continuing beyond Bengaluru to Mysuru or the Karnataka temple circuits, which is a different and longer quote — and one where the AITP saving compounds with every additional state crossing.
The arithmetic, two days
What our quote for a 45-seat AC coach looks like, line by line, for a two-day return with one night in Bengaluru.
| Line | Basis | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Coach hire | Approx. 700 km garage-to-garage × ₹62 – ₹70 / km | ₹43,000 – ₹49,000 |
| Driver bata | 2 calendar days × ₹800 – ₹1,000 | ₹1,600 – ₹2,000 |
| Night halt | Bus sleeping away from the Chennai yard | separate line |
| Karnataka entry tax | AITP vehicle, 2023 rules | nil |
| Tolls and parking | NH48 plazas, Bengaluru parking | at actuals |
| GST | 5% on the transport service | on the subtotal |
| Published all-in band | Including bata, night halt and GST | ₹58,000 – ₹88,000 |
| The same trip on a state permit | Karnataka entry tax added | + ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 |
Questions we answer daily
How much does a bus from Chennai to Bangalore cost?
₹58,000 – ₹88,000 all-in for a 45-seat AC coach over two days and one night on an All India Tourist Permit vehicle — around 700 km garage-to-garage at ₹62 – ₹70 per km, two bata days, night halt and 5% GST. Tolls and parking are at actuals.
Do I need a Karnataka permit for a bus from Chennai?
The bus does. On an AITP vehicle, the 2023 rules bar Karnataka from levying any border, composite, passenger or check-post tax. On a Tamil Nadu state permit, the entry tax for a 35 to 49 seater is typically ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 per entry, payable again on the return crossing.
How long does the drive take?
Six to seven hours for roughly 350 km on NH48 through Sriperumbudur, Vellore, Ambur and Krishnagiri, entering Karnataka at Hosur — longer if you meet the Electronic City approach at the wrong hour. Tell us the actual Bengaluru destination so the departure is planned around the last hour.
What is the cheapest way to take a group to Bangalore?
A 45-seat non-AC 3+2 coach at ₹45 – ₹52 per km on an AITP vehicle. The permit class, not the seat class, is where the real money is: the entry tax you avoid on a single return trip is larger than the difference between a non-AC coach and an AC one.
Can you arrange a one-way drop to Bangalore?
Yes, but understand the pricing. The bus has to come home, so a one-way charter is billed garage-to-garage — the return kilometres are real even with nobody aboard. For most groups a two-day return works out better value than two one-way movements.
Is a Volvo worth it on this route?
On this one, yes. Six to seven hours of NH48 is exactly what air suspension and wide recliners are for, and the class runs ₹70 – ₹95 per km against ₹62 – ₹70 for a standard AC coach. For a corporate or wedding movement, it is the difference between arriving ready and arriving flattened.
What about a bus from Bangalore to Chennai?
That is the mirror-image problem and belongs to our Bengaluru operation: leaving Karnataka, it is Tamil Nadu's entry tax that applies — ₹25,000 for a 35-seater, ₹30,500 for a 45-seater and ₹33,000 for a 49-seater on a state permit. Their permits guide covers it in full.
Can we continue to Mysore or Coorg from Bangalore?
Yes, and it is quoted as a longer multi-day charter against the daily minimum with bata for every calendar day. The AITP advantage compounds on those itineraries, because each additional state crossing on a state-permit vehicle is another entry charge.
