Chennai to Tirupati by private bus
The most-booked charter out of Chennai. What the whole bus costs by seat class, how the day actually runs, and why the Andhra border line on your quote should read nil.
In short
A one-day Chennai to Tirupati charter is ₹26,000 – ₹36,000 all-in for a 45-seat AC coach and roughly half that in a 27-seat AC minibus. It is 140 km each way on NH716 via Tiruttani, about 3.5 to 4 hours. Billing runs against a 200 – 250 km daily minimum plus one bata day; on our All India Tourist Permit buses the Andhra Pradesh entry tax is nil.

What the whole bus costs, by class
Charter pricing — the vehicle, not a seat. Bands include the bus, fuel, driver, insurance, one bata day and 5% GST; tolls and the Alipiri and Tirumala parking are at actuals on receipts.
| Vehicle | One day, there and back | Overnight, 2 days | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20-seat AC tempo traveller | ₹8,000 – ₹11,000 | add one bata day and one daily minimum | Family groups, small bhajan circles |
| 27-seat AC minibus | roughly half a 45-seat coach | 2 bata days | A group of 22 with margin to spare |
| 45-seat non-AC coach — 3+2 | below the AC band; 300 km minimum applies | 2 bata days | Temple committees on a tight budget |
| 45-seat AC coach — 2+2 pushback | ₹26,000 – ₹36,000 | ₹24,800 – ₹38,900 before tolls | The standard booking |
| 45-seat Volvo | ₹24,000 at the 250 km slab, plus bata and GST | quoted per day | Corporate and senior groups |

The route and what the day really looks like
It is 140 km from Chennai on NH716 through Tiruttani — three and a half to four hours in a loaded coach, longer if you leave into the morning peak on the Poonamallee side. The alternative approach via Puttur exists and is occasionally quicker when NH716 is disrupted, but for a coach the Tiruttani road is the default and the one our drivers know.
A realistic one-day shape: leave Chennai between 3 and 4 am, reach Alipiri around 7, allow for the vehicle check at the foot of the ghat, climb, and be at the temple for a mid-morning slot. Back in Chennai by 8 or 9 pm. That is a long day and it is why the AC 2+2 coach rather than the 3+2 non-AC is the sensible booking — the seat you sit in for eight hours matters more than the ₹4,000.
If your darshan slot is early morning, the day trip stops working and you want an overnight: travel up the previous evening, sleep in Tirupati, darshan at first light, home by afternoon. That becomes two calendar days of bata and two daily minimums, and the arithmetic is on our rate card.
The Andhra border, and why your quote should say nil
Tirupati is in Andhra Pradesh, so every Chennai coach on this route crosses a state line twice in a day. On a Tamil Nadu state permit, Andhra charges entry tax — ₹3,500 for a 12-seater, ₹10,500 for a 21-seater, ₹12,500 for a 25-seater, and more for coaches.
On an All India Tourist Permit vehicle it charges nothing. The 2023 AITP rules bar composite state tax, border tax, passenger tax and check-post tax on an AITP bus outright. We run AITP vehicles on this route as standard and the entry-tax line on your quote reads nil, with the permit class named so you can check it.
If another operator's Tirupati quote does not mention the permit at all, ask. It is the difference between a clean number and a conversation at a check-post with forty-five people watching.
Alipiri, the ghat and where large coaches stand
The ghat road up to Tirumala has rules, and a driver who has not done it before will cost you an hour. Vehicles are checked at the foot; the climb is a defined one-way system; and parking at the top is a managed arrangement, not a car park you choose.
Practical consequences for a group: there will be walking at the top whatever vehicle you arrive in, so plan for elderly devotees accordingly. The bus will not be where you left it at the exact moment you return, so two people in the group should have the driver's mobile number. And the parking fee is a genuine at-actuals line that appears on your invoice with the slip attached.
Smaller vehicles do not avoid the walk but they do move faster through the approach, which is one reason a 22-person group is better off in a 27-seat minibus than in a 45-seat coach with twenty spare seats.
The arithmetic for a 45-seat AC coach, two days
For groups whose darshan slot forces an overnight, here is the same sum we send by WhatsApp, line by line.
| Line | Basis | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Coach hire | 2 days × 200 – 250 km minimum × ₹62 – ₹70 / km | ₹22,000 – ₹35,000 |
| Driver bata | 2 calendar days × ₹800 – ₹1,000 | ₹1,600 – ₹2,000 |
| Andhra Pradesh entry tax | AITP vehicle, 2023 rules | nil |
| Tolls, Alipiri and Tirumala parking | At actuals, receipts attached | extra |
| GST | 5% on the transport service | ₹1,180 – ₹1,850 |
| Total before tolls and parking | ₹24,800 – ₹38,900 |
Booking in peak season
Weekends are the base load. Brahmotsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi and the long weekends are when Chennai's coach fleet empties towards Tirupati and late callers end up in whatever is left rather than what they wanted.
Three weeks of notice for a peak date, a week for an ordinary one. A 25% advance holds the vehicle; the registration number and driver's mobile reach you by 6 pm the previous evening, which also matters because some groups submit the vehicle number with their darshan arrangements.
Questions we answer daily
How much does a bus to Tirupati cost from Chennai?
₹26,000 – ₹36,000 all-in for a one-day return charter in a 45-seat AC coach, and roughly half that in a 27-seat AC minibus. That covers the bus, fuel, driver, one bata day and 5% GST; tolls and the Tirumala parking are at actuals with receipts attached.
How long does it take to reach Tirupati from Chennai by bus?
Three and a half to four hours for the 140 km on NH716 via Tiruttani, plus the Alipiri check and the ghat climb at the far end. Coaches leaving Chennai between 3 and 4 am reach Alipiri around 7 am, which is what makes a one-day darshan trip workable.
Do we pay Andhra Pradesh entry tax on a Chennai bus?
Not on an All India Tourist Permit vehicle — the 2023 rules bar any border, composite, passenger or check-post tax. On a Tamil Nadu state permit it is ₹10,500 for a 21-seater and ₹12,500 for a 25-seater, with higher figures for coaches. We run AITP buses on this route as standard.
Can a 45 seater bus go up to Tirumala?
Yes. Vehicles are checked at Alipiri and the ghat runs on a defined one-way system, and parking at the top is a managed arrangement rather than a car park you pick. Expect a walk at the top whatever you arrive in, and make sure two people have the driver's number.
Is a one-day Tirupati trip realistic or should we stay overnight?
A one-day trip works for mid-morning or later darshan slots: leave Chennai at 3 to 4 am, back by 8 or 9 pm. For an early-morning slot, travel up the previous evening. That makes it two calendar days of bata and two daily minimums — ₹24,800 – ₹38,900 before tolls in a 45-seat AC coach.
Which is better for Tirupati, AC or non-AC?
AC, on this route. It is eight hours of seat time in a single day, and the 2+2 pushback layout is worth the roughly ₹15 – ₹20 per kilometre difference. Non-AC 3+2 at ₹45 – ₹52 per km is defensible for a young group on a tight budget and little else.
Do you arrange darshan tickets?
No — darshan slots and special-entry arrangements are made by the group or its committee, and we would rather say so than imply an influence we do not have. Tell us the slot time and we will build the departure around it, which is the part we genuinely control.
How far ahead should we book?
A week for an ordinary date, three weeks for Brahmotsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi and long weekends — those are when the whole Chennai coach fleet heads the same way. A 25% advance holds the vehicle, and you get the registration number by 6 pm the day before.
