Wedding guest movement
Hotel to mandapam on muhurtham day, and out-of-town family brought in from Madurai, Trichy or Bengaluru. We quote weddings on a 12-hour basis because the 10-hour package is usually optimistic.
The most-asked-for vehicle in Chennai and the most mis-quoted, because three different buses answer to the same seat count. Here is what each one costs and which one your trip actually needs.
In short
A 45 seater in Chennai is ₹45 – ₹52 per km as a non-AC 3+2 coach, ₹62 – ₹70 as an AC 2+2 pushback coach and ₹70 – ₹95 as a Volvo or BharatBenz multi-axle. Local 10 hr / 100 km packages are ₹11,000 – ₹12,500, ₹16,000 – ₹18,000 and ₹18,000 – ₹27,000 respectively, against daily minimums of 200 – 300 km with bata and 5% GST extra.

Three vehicles, one seat count. Every rate here is quoted on our standard basis — bus, fuel, driver and insurance inside; tolls, parking, bata, permits, hill surcharge and 5% GST outside and itemised.
| The bus | Layout | Local 10 hr / 100 km | Extra km | Outstation ₹ / km | Min km / day | Bata / day |

| 45 seater AC — tourist coach | 2+2 pushback | ₹16,000 – ₹18,000 | ₹70 – ₹85 | ₹62 – ₹70 | 200 – 250 | ₹800 – ₹1,000 |

Both are quoting a 45-seater. Only one of them is quoting your trip.
The ₹45 bus is a 3+2 bench-seat non-AC coach — the vehicle that does Tamil Nadu's school runs and factory shifts. It is a perfectly good bus, it is built to be robust rather than comfortable, and for a two-hour transfer it is the sensible economic choice.
The ₹90 bus is a multi-axle Volvo or BharatBenz with air suspension, wide reclining seats and a driver used to running it. On a Bengaluru or Kodaikanal run the difference is not decoration: it is whether a group of forty-five arrives able to do the thing they travelled for.
Between them sits the AC 2+2 tourist coach at ₹62 – ₹70, which is what most groups end up in and what most Chennai enquiries actually mean. When you ring an operator and say "45-seater", specify one of those three or you are not comparing prices — you are comparing vehicles.
Non-AC 3+2. Five seats across, fixed backs, sliding windows, an underbody boot, 45 to 55 seats in the same shell. No entertainment system worth the name. Steps are higher and the aisle is narrower. Built for volume and durability, and priced accordingly.
AC 2+2 pushback. Four across, reclining, sealed windows, curtains, a full-length underbody luggage bay, usually a screen and a microphone that the tour leader will use more than anyone expects. This is the class for four-hour-plus journeys, mixed-age groups and anything where the passengers are guests rather than staff.
Volvo / BharatBenz multi-axle. Air suspension that changes what a ghat road feels like, wider seats, charging points, a quieter cabin at highway speed and a body that holds the road better when loaded. These buses also tend to be newer and better maintained simply because of what they cost to own.
Across all three we send the registration number the evening before, and insurance, fitness certificate and permit copies on request — which schools, colleges and HR departments should ask for as routine rather than as an accusation.
All-in bands for a 45-seat AC coach, built the way our quotes are built: billed kilometres against the daily minimum, bata by calendar day, permits where the route leaves Tamil Nadu, plus 5% GST. Tolls and parking are on top and passed through on receipts.
| Route | Distance | Shape | All-in band, 45-seat AC coach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chennai – Mahabalipuram | 60 km | 1 day, local package | ₹12,000 – ₹20,000 |
| Chennai – Tirupati | 140 km | 1 day darshan run | ₹26,000 – ₹36,000 |
| Chennai – Pondicherry | 170 km | 1 day | ₹18,000 – ₹28,000 |
| Chennai – Yelagiri | 220 km | 1 day + hill surcharge | ₹14,000 – ₹24,000 at 27 – 32 seats; coaches quoted on request |
| Chennai – Velankanni | 300 km | 2 days, 1 night | ₹48,000 – ₹68,000 |
| Chennai – Bengaluru | NH48 via Vellore and Krishnagiri | 2 days, 1 night | ₹58,000 – ₹88,000 on an AITP bus; add ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 on a state permit |
| Chennai – Rameswaram | — | 3 days, 2 nights | ₹72,000 – ₹1,05,000 |
| Chennai – Kodaikanal | 520 km | 3 days, 2 nights + hill surcharge | ₹78,000 – ₹1,10,000 |
This is the part of the conversation most operators have after taking the booking. We would rather have it before.
Temple streets. Mylapore's inner lanes, the Kanchipuram temple approaches, most of the Navagraha circuit around Kumbakonam and the older parts of Tiruvannamalai will not take a 45-seat body. The group ends up walking the last kilometre with their prasadam, in the sun. A 25 or 32-seater gets closer.
Ghat roads. Kodaikanal, Yelagiri, Yercaud and Ooty are all possible in a 45-seater and none of them are pleasant in one. Our standing recommendation is a 30 or 32-seat midi coach for hill trips, or two of them for a 45-strong group. We also plan the climb in daylight; a request for a midnight hill arrival gets a counter-proposal.
Sabarimala. Large coaches face restrictions on the Pamba approach in season. Groups of forty-five travel as two minibuses, and anyone promising you a 45-seater to the base has not run the trip.
Industrial estates and apartment gates. Ambattur and Ekkatuthangal lanes, and OMR apartment basements, are height and turning-circle problems rather than length problems. For staff routes we do a physical route survey before quoting rather than discovering it on day one.

A full year group to Mahabalipuram or Pondicherry, or a college tour that runs four days. Non-AC 3+2 at 45 or 55 seats is the season's workhorse.
Three-shift rosters at Sriperumbudur, Irungattukottai, Oragadam and Maraimalai Nagar, on 12 to 24 month contracts with a backup vehicle guarantee.
Tirupati, Velankanni, Rameswaram and Madurai, where forty-five people and one vehicle is the whole point. Temple-street access checked before we confirm the class.
Engineering batches to the plant belt that makes a third of India's commercial vehicles. Gate timing and ID lists matter more than the rate.
Airport to venue to hotel loops for a two-day conference, quoted per day on the local package with a fixed reporting time and a named driver.
For a 45-seat vehicle carrying students, staff or wedding guests, four documents settle the question of whether the operator is real.
We send all four on request without treating it as a negotiation. Schools and colleges: make it a line in your purchase order. It costs you nothing and it removes the only real risk in the transaction.
₹45 – ₹52 per km for a non-AC 3+2 coach, ₹62 – ₹70 for an AC 2+2 pushback coach and ₹70 – ₹95 for a Volvo or BharatBenz multi-axle. Daily minimums are 300 km non-AC and 200 – 250 km AC, with driver bata of ₹500 – ₹1,250 per calendar day and 5% GST extra.
On the 10 hour, 100 km local package: ₹11,000 – ₹12,500 non-AC, ₹16,000 – ₹18,000 AC, ₹18,000 – ₹27,000 for a Volvo. Beyond the package you pay ₹48 – ₹85 per extra kilometre and ₹900 – ₹1,400 per extra hour depending on class, plus bata, tolls, parking and GST.
₹26,000 – ₹36,000 all-in for a one-day darshan run in a 45-seat AC coach — 140 km each way on NH716, billed against a 200 – 250 km daily minimum at ₹62 – ₹70 per km, one bata day at ₹800 – ₹1,000, tolls and Tirumala parking at actuals, plus 5% GST.
Forty-five, one per seat, and we do not overload. For a group of 45 we would actually suggest a 49 or 55-seat body — the 10 to 15% margin you should always build in means a group of 45 in a 45-seater has none, and the last-minute addition is the most predictable event in group travel.
Yes, as a 3+2 bench body, and it is the cheapest per-head vehicle we run at ₹45 – ₹52 per km. The same shell fitted 3+2 seats up to 55. Below four hours it is the right choice; above four hours, or overnight, the ₹15 – ₹20 per km more for AC 2+2 is money well spent.
It can, at ₹78,000 – ₹1,10,000 for three days and two nights plus the ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 hill surcharge, and we plan the climb in daylight. But we would rather send a 30 or 32-seat midi coach up that ghat — or two of them for a 45-strong group — and we will say so before you book.
Usually the body length and the last row. Both exist in 3+2 non-AC and 2+2 AC. A 49-seat AC coach is ₹16,000 – ₹18,000 on a local package, the same band as the 45, so if your group is near 45 the 49 is often the better booking for no extra cost.
Yes — the vehicle, fuel for the contracted distance, the driver, insurance and routine maintenance are all inside the quoted rate. Outside it: tolls, parking, driver bata per calendar day, inter-state permits, extra kilometres and hours, the hill surcharge and 5% GST, each named on the quote.
A week for ordinary dates. Three to four weeks for January to March wedding muhurthams, the November to February school and college trip season and long weekends — those are the weeks when 45 and 49-seat AC coaches are the first thing in Chennai to run out.
