Why this route should be quoted on the package
Mahabalipuram is the clearest example on this site of the local-versus-outstation distinction actually mattering.
At 60 km each way, the round trip is 120 km — barely over the 100 km inside a local package, and far below the 200 to 300 km daily minimum you would be billed on an outstation quote. A group that gets quoted this route at ₹62 per kilometre against a 250 km minimum pays for 250 km. On the package they pay for 100, plus the twenty-odd extra kilometres at the class rate.
The catch is the ten-hour clock. A day that starts at 7 am and includes the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas, Arjuna's Penance, lunch and a beach hour will finish the ten hours before it finishes the kilometres. So the honest quote for this route names both: the package, the extra-hour rate, and a realistic view of when the bus is likely to get back to our yard.
How the day runs, and where a coach can park
ECR is fast and straightforward out of the city, and the drive takes about ninety minutes with a coach — longer on a Sunday morning, when half of Chennai is doing the same thing. Leaving by 7 am makes a real difference to both the drive and the heat at the monuments.
Parking is the thing worth planning. The monument area has designated coach parking, and it is not adjacent to every site: the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas and Arjuna's Penance are a walk apart, and a 45-seat coach cannot shuttle between them through the town. Groups do better to accept one parking point and walk the circuit than to try to move the bus three times.
The Crocodile Bank at 40 km and the Kalpakkam side sit on the same road, and either can be added to the day if the ten-hour clock allows. Adding both usually does not work, and we will say so rather than let the day end with an hour of extra-hour billing.
Who books this route
Schools. This is the default Chennai excursion, and in November and December it is the single busiest day-trip destination in the state. A 45 or 55-seat non-AC coach at ₹11,000 – ₹14,000 works out to roughly ₹250 a student for a full year-group section.
OMR and Siruseri teams. The ECR resort belt south of Mahabalipuram is where Chennai's IT offsites happen, and the run from a tech park down ECR is short enough that a 32-seat AC midi coach for a day is a modest line in an offsite budget.
Families and visiting groups. Weekend trips in a 20-seat traveller, often combined with Crocodile Bank for groups with children.
Conference and client days. A morning of meetings in the city and an afternoon at the monuments is a standard Chennai pattern for visiting delegations, and the vehicle usually needs to look the part — which is where the AC coach rather than the 3+2 earns its money.

Per day. The round trip is around 120 km, which is just over the 100 km in a local package and well under the 200 – 300 km daily minimum an outstation quote would bill you. A per-kilometre quote against a minimum costs you for kilometres you will never drive.
Can we add the Crocodile Bank to the same trip?
Yes — it is at 40 km on the same road and fits comfortably into a package day. Adding Kalpakkam as well usually does not, because the ten-hour clock runs out before the kilometres do, and the extra hours are ₹900 – ₹1,250 depending on the vehicle.

What does an ECR resort offsite bus cost?
A 32-seat AC midi coach at ₹13,000 – ₹15,000 for the day covers the standard OMR-to-ECR-resort offsite, including waiting all day at the venue. Tolls on ECR and the resort's parking are billed at actuals, with 5% GST on the transport service.
How far in advance should we book?
Two or three days for an ordinary date, and three weeks for November to February, when every school in the city is running the same excursion. Weekend dates in that window go first, and they go for the non-AC 45 and 55-seaters before anything else.
