Chennai to Yelagiri bus hire
The closest hill station to Chennai, and the one route on this site where our advice is consistently to book a smaller bus than your headcount suggests.
In short
A Chennai to Yelagiri bus charter runs ₹14,000 – ₹24,000 for a 27 to 32 seat coach as a day trip, plus the ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 hill-station surcharge. It is 220 km on NH48 to Vaniyambadi and then fourteen hairpin bends up to the plateau — a climb we will not take a 45-seater up without looking at the group first.

What the trip costs
Outstation basis over a 440 km round trip, past every daily minimum we run. Bus, fuel, driver and insurance included; the hill surcharge, tolls, parking, bata and 5% GST are separate named lines.
| Vehicle | Day trip | Hill surcharge | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20-seat AC tempo traveller | ₹12,000 – ₹15,000 | ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 | Handles the hairpins best of anything we run |
| 27-seat AC minibus | ₹14,000 – ₹20,000 | ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 | The sensible default for this route |
| 32-seat AC midi coach | ₹18,000 – ₹24,000 | ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 | The largest body we send up without a check |
| 45-seat coach | quoted on request | ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 | Possible, not recommended — see below |
| Two-day version | add one daily minimum and one bata day | once | Worth it if you want the lake and the trek |

The road: NH48, Vaniyambadi, then the climb
The first 200 kilometres are easy — NH48 west through Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram district and Vellore to Vaniyambadi. A coach does that in three and a half hours comfortably.
The last part is different. Fourteen hairpin bends take the road from the plains to the Yelagiri plateau, and a fully loaded large coach on that climb is slow, hot on the brakes coming down, and unpleasant for anyone in the back three rows. It is not dangerous in the right vehicle with the right driver. It is simply a different kind of driving from the highway that preceded it.
That is what the ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 hill surcharge pays for: brake, clutch and tyre wear that flat running does not produce, and a bus that comes back needing attention rather than just fuel. It applies equally at Kodaikanal, Yercaud and Ooty, and it is a separate line rather than a quiet uplift on the per-kilometre rate.
Why we push groups towards a smaller bus
For most of this site, bigger is cheaper per head and we say so. Yelagiri is the exception.
A group of forty-five in one 45-seat coach will get up the hill. They will do it slowly, they will feel every one of the fourteen bends, and on the descent the driver will be working. The same forty-five people in two 27-seat minibuses climb faster, sit more comfortably, and can be dropped nearer the lake, the Punganur tank and the trek start points — most of which have approach roads and parking built for small vehicles rather than coaches.
It costs more. We still recommend it, and we will put both options on the quote so the decision is yours with the numbers visible rather than ours made quietly.
We also plan the climb in daylight. A request to arrive on the plateau at midnight gets a counter-proposal, not a yes.
Day trip or overnight
Yelagiri is the only hill station Chennai can genuinely do in a day: 220 km each way, leave at 5 am, on the plateau by 9.30, back in the city by 9 pm. That is the standard college outing and corporate team day, and it is why this route sits in the education and offsite calendar rather than the holiday one.
An overnight adds one daily minimum and one bata day, and it converts a rushed day into a proper trip — the lake, the Swamimalai trek, the Nature Park and the Jalagamparai falls side. For a college group where the point is the outing rather than the destination, the day version is fine. For anything where people want to walk, take the night.
Season: the hill is pleasant most of the year and busiest in the April to June summer window and on long weekends. Book three weeks ahead for those; a weekday in August can be arranged in two days.
Questions we answer daily
How much is a bus from Chennai to Yelagiri?
₹14,000 – ₹24,000 for a day trip in a 27 to 32 seat coach, plus the ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 hill-station surcharge, tolls, parking, one bata day and 5% GST. A 20-seat AC tempo traveller runs ₹12,000 – ₹15,000 on the same basis.
How long does it take to reach Yelagiri from Chennai?
About four and a half hours in a coach: three and a half for the 200 km of NH48 to Vaniyambadi, and the better part of an hour for the fourteen hairpin bends up to the plateau. Leaving Chennai at 5 am puts a group on the hill by around 9.30.
Can a 45 seater bus go up to Yelagiri?
It can, and we would rather it did not. A loaded 45-seater is slow up the fourteen hairpins and hard on the brakes coming down, and most of the plateau's parking is built for smaller vehicles. For a group of 45 we recommend two 27-seat minibuses and show both prices on the quote.
What is the hill station charge for Yelagiri?
₹1,500 – ₹2,500, the same band that applies to Kodaikanal, Yercaud and Ooty. It covers brake, clutch and tyre wear on the ghat and appears as its own line rather than being folded into the per-kilometre rate.
Is Yelagiri a realistic day trip from Chennai?
Yes — it is the only hill station that genuinely is. Leave at 5 am, be on the plateau by 9.30, back in Chennai by around 9 pm. If the group wants to walk the Swamimalai trek or spend time at the lake, an overnight adds one daily minimum and one bata day and is worth it.
Do you drive up the ghat at night?
We plan the climb in daylight. Requests for a midnight arrival on the plateau get a counter-proposal rather than a confirmation — ghat driving with a loaded bus in the dark is not a risk we take to save a few hours of scheduling.
What else can we combine with Yelagiri?
Vellore's Golden Temple and the fort sit directly on NH48 on the way, and Tiruvannamalai is reachable as a second day. Each addition is another daily minimum and another bata day, so combining them works best on a two-day trip rather than by stretching the one-day version.
When should we book?
Three weeks ahead for April to June and any long weekend, which are the busy windows for all of Chennai's near hill stations. A weekday trip in the July to August trough can usually be arranged in two or three days, and prices sit at the bottom of the band.
